Nestor Torres: The Magic of Latin Jazz

If a flute could talk and sing, it would certainly be in the voice of Nestor Torres, for he speaks through his instrument. Equally fluent in Jazz, Classical and Latin idioms, his fluid versatility sets him apart. Nestor’s total command of his instrument allows him a freedom of expression that is at once captivating and liberating, powerful and genuine.

Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Nestor Torres has played music all his life. His parents (the father, a gifted musician himself, and mother, an educator and business woman) gave him a set of drums at age 5, and later took up the flute (at age twelve). He moved to NYC with his family in his teenage years and went on to study at Mannes School of Music and later at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. At that time he was also able to learn to improvise in a style of Cuban Dance music called ‘Charanga’, which helped to shape and develop Nestor’s melodic and danceable sound.

In 1981, Nestor moved to Miami, where he continued to develop his unique sound - and a strong following. Since then he has - and continues to - tour all over the world. He has also performed and recorded with the likes of Ricky Martin, Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock, Gloria Estefan, and many more.

Nestor Torres has recorded 13 Cds to date. His 5th & 7th records, Treasure of the Heart and My Latin Soul, were nominated for a Latin Grammy, and his production This Side Of Paradise won the Latin Grammy award in the Pop instrumental category on September 11, 2001.

“Of course it was a great honor and privilege to win the Grammy,” Torres reflects. “That being said, the fact that I was to receive it on 9/11 gave my work and my music a stronger sense of mission and purpose. Terrorism and violence come from ignorance, anger, and hopelessness. Music inspires and empowers; it soothes the human heart and enlightens the spirit. I have made it my prime point to create music and live my life in a way that does just that.”

From that experience, together with a commission to compose and perform for the Dalai Lama, Nestor Torres produced Dances, Prayers & Meditations For Peace in 2005. At that year he also offered a live performance at the Heineken Jazz in Puerto Rico .

On the third and final week of The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2009 Miami Residency season (from April 1st through the 4th), Nestor Torres was the featured artist in The Cleveland Orchestra’s education series at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. On September 9, 2009 he played at the Greek Theatre (Los Angeles) with the Dave Matthews Band. He guested on the song "Lying In The Hands Of God." He performed at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games opening ceremony in Puerto Rico.

Hamlet and his Latin Jazz Experience

"Hamlet and his Latin Jazz Experience" is a brand new septet founded by Hamlet Fiorilli, pianist and composer with Colombian and Italian origins. All tunes are Hamlet's original compositions. He combines his strong latin roots with a particular sense for traditiional jazz flavors. The band is located in Carinthia (Austria). The seven top musicians create their own atmosphere, tastefully mixing jazz improvisations with the colors, flavors and traditions of Hamlet's music, resulting in a powerful sound ready to catch and surprise the listener.

Hamlet was born in Bogotà, Colombia in 1967. The family moved to Italy, and he soon began his musical studies on clarinet and drums, and later at age 13 on piano, studying with a private teacher for one year. He then continued instinctively learning by playing, as he still does today, considering himself more a musician than a pianist. Concurrently to the above studies, he took his diploma in french horn at the P. Mascagni conservatory of Livorno, also studying composition, choir conducting and classical percussion, and finished his arranging studies with a private teacher in the Berkley school method.

Piano became his main instrument; he started professionally with his father's latin band "Macondo" at age 15, also replacing his piano teacher on the local jazz bigband. There followed many concerts with different bands, playing many genres, helping him develop a big, open view of music. At age 17 he played a few seasons on cruise ships around Europe, North Africa and Russia and later moved to Monte Carlo, Divonne Les Bains, and Vienna, playing in prestigious clubs and hotels. In Italy he formed a pop-rock band called "Animali Rari," performing hundreds of concerts around the country, winning prizes and participating in natioinal radio and tv shows. He was the youngest orchestral conductor/arranger on the important Sanremo Festival, and collaborated with artists on the Italian pop scene, including Marina Fiordaliso, Fiorella Pierobon, Giorgia, Vinicio Capossela, Maurizio Solieri and Daniele Tedeschi (guitarist and drummer of Vasco Rossi.) On the salsa side he played a few years with Jairo's Tribu Tayrona (Columbia) and again travelled Europe playing in Cannes, Luxemburg, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and in Trinidad (Cuba) made several performances with the salsa band "Sonora Trinitaria." Hamlet is also currently playing with the American singer Gail Anderson.In some aspects, Hamlet and his band remind us of Serbian Jazz veterans - Jovan Maljokovic Sextet- because similiar style and similiar mood characterize both groups interpretations.

Hamlet & his Latin Jazz Experience most recent album " Descarumbiando " shows just how much this group has imbued the spirit of the Latin Jazz music genre. Hamlet and his fellows undoubtly did a good and fine job.

“Recuerdos” showcases the full intensity of the percussionists on this date. Their work is outstanding and compliments the inner clave of Hamlet Fiorilli’s piano work. Congas and drums combine sharply and there is a superb flamenco break and the handclaps accentuate the heat of the piece. “Suite Latina,” although short is a fine composition rooted in the valse mode but then soon traverses the gamut of rhythms with a dynamic harmonic crescendo, played by the piano almost mimicking a Gershwin roll at first then streaking ahead. “Ron Y Gin” is a classic Cuban mambo and son track that is played with swagger.

“El Fuego del Padre” explores the edges of tonal dissonance and also features some fine conga work. “Gospa” is a well-written authentic bolero. “Tocando Mi Oropel” is rendered as a chorinho and features a memorable dialogue between Fiorilli’s piano and Simon Pibal’s clarinet. In “Bluesambongo” the funky Afro-American and samba rhythmic dialects collide. The highlight of “Siete Camisas” is the fine sense of togetherness that exists in the band as they work each other in unison. And “Tranquilo” is a quiet closer for the date, but not before the quiet fire of Hans Lassnig’s trumpet burns through the bolero.

SWING FEVER & DENISE PERRIER

This band has specialized in playing 30´s and 40´s jazz since 1978. The band has traveled and recorded with famous musicians, including a Count Basie, Duke Ellington, the trompetist Clark Terry, the clarinetist Buddy De Franco and Terry Gibbs. As “Now Jazz” said, the “Swing Fever maintains its music alive without being a museum piece.”

Created and consolidated in the area of San Francisco Bay, Swing Fever has persisted in its own style. They’ve played at the festival of jazz in Monterrey, also in the classic festivals of jazz of San Francisco, San José, Sacramento and Los Angeles. In 1990, They were recognized by the Advice for Arts of California, since then they haven’t stopped playing and have already 400 concerts just in California.
Rythmical, romantic, torrid and ingenious… that’s the music of Swing Fever. As special guest, Denise Perrier, it’s one of the most important Jazz & Blues singers in San Francisco, with 30 years of professional race participating in the most importants Festivals at Europe, Asia and the United States.

EDDIE GOMEZ TRIO
(Saturday november 28th)

Grown in New York, near Harlem, He studied contrabass in 1955, participating several years in the Newport Festival Youth Band, orchestra of young people under the direction of Marshall Brown. In 1963 he studied at Julliard’s School of Music, and a couple of years later, comprises with Marian McPartland Trio. Later he works with Paul Bley, Gerry Mulligan and Jim Hall.

Bill Evans proposed him to work together, after being in the Village Vanguard (1966), a collaboration that will extend until 1977, which does not prevent him to work with other great figures of the jazz as: Miles Davis, Steve Gadd, Lee Konitz, Jay McShann, Jeremy Steig, Albert Magelsdorff, etc. Once finalized its stage with Evans, he worked with Charles Mingus and Chick Korea, beside having diverse works in Europe. During the 80’s, Gomez work basically as a studio musician and with Steps Ahead, a jazz fusion group that was Co-founder. Its first disc like leader, appears in 1984, and two years later leaves the Steps, to play with Randy Brecker, Eliane Elias, Lew Soloff and Michel Petrucciani. In the 90’s, Gomez returns several times to Puerto Rico and realises tours, al around the world, with his own formation. At the moment he’s a resident artist in the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico.

Invited group originary from Belgium. The North Sea Coyotes is an amalgam of several sorts, where country blues becomes the most remarkable presence (this prevalence does not prevent, nevertheless, to turn toward the Latin rates & jazz).

Nicolas Bearde vocalist from San Francisco, California USA, member of Bobby McFerrin's renouned vocal ensemble, " Voicestra".

Has long been recognized as an adept and fearless vocal improviser, who infuses his jazz vocals with contemporary nuances, and seductive techniques, but who also takes humorous detours into Pop, Soul, Blues, and R&B styles. Bearde has been compared to vocal icons like Lou Rawls, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, and Jon Lucien. He has worked steadily with an array of artists from Patti Austin, Michael Bolton and Janis Siegel to McFerrin, John Handy, Chris Camozzi, and his own outstanding group, the Right Groove. He’s cut three albums for Right Groove Records, his own imprint. The first, 1998's Crossing the Line, the 2005 follow-up All About Love and 2008's Live at Yoshi's - A Salute to Lou .

GABRIEL HERNáNDEZ : Piano

Cuban-born Gabriel Hernández Cadenas started his piano education at seven years old in "Luis Casas Romero" Music Conservatory in Camagüey, Cuba. At only 15, he received the EGREM Prize (Recordings and Musical Editions Enterprise) for the Best Musical Orchestration.
One of San Miguel de Allende’s most beloved musicians, he has also been involved in the annual "Jazz Plaza" festivals of Havana which led to becoming a member of the Leon Thomas and Dizzy Gillespie groups. He has also shared the stage with other great musicians including Roy Hargrove, James Carter, Chucho Valdez, Tito Puente, and The Fine Wine Trio. He´s playing regullary with "AfroCuban- All Stars", cunducting by Juan de Marcos Gonzalez from Buenavista Social Club.

DAVID GILMORE QUARTET
(Monday november 30th)

Internationally acclaimed guitarist who fuses jazz elements, Funk, African Music and World Music. From the past mid decade the guitarist and composer David Gilmore have recorded and played with some of the musicians of more high stature in modern music, including Wayne Shorter, Dave Douglas, Muhal Richard Abrams, Sam Rivers, Steve Coleman, Don Bryon, Cassandra Wilson, Uri Caine, Randy Brecker, and David Sanborn.

It has appeared in more than 40 recordings and has been an important presence in the international scene. In the summer of 2001 he launched his first recording “Ritualism”, that has received the applause of the international critic, and was named to be CD of the year by the Jazz Jornalists Association. Mr. Gilmore also recently has been name for the category Rising Stars by the magazine Down Beat.

KATIE THIROUX TRIO
(Tuesday december 1st)

The acrobatic vocal adjustments of Katie and their humble instrumental sounds established their unique style, has turned her it into one of the most important young people of the new scene of the contemporary jazz. The trio has been influenced by the styles of Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Bill Evans and Anita O' Day.

One of her recent presentations is the one with Terri Lyne Carrington and its group, the Mosaic, that also included the talent of Geri Allen and Ingrid Jensen in the 2009 Jazz Festival of Münster and with the Carrington Trio and Dr. Billy Taylor this last January.

Other remarkable presentations include the 50th Jazz Festival of Monterey, the Newport and Vail Jazz Festivals. Katie Thiroux is original from Los Angeles and studied in the university of Berklee where it received the presidential scholarship. With her trio, she travels, realises and leads clinics for the audiences and students, because she feels that the education is necessary in maintaining jazz alive.

DAVID SáNCHEZ QUARTET
(Friday december 4th)
David Sanchez, is one of the sax players of contemporary jazz with more reputation in the United States. In 1991, before turning 23 years, Dizzy Gillespie invited him to join the United Nations Orchestra, acclaimed group that summoned the best musicians of jazz of the five continents; and although David was the youngest of the orchestra, in its curriculum already appeared participation with Miriam Makeba, Paquito D'Rivera, Hilton Ruiz, Eddie Palmieri, Claudius Roditi, Larry Ridley Legacy Jazz.

After the retirement from the scene of Dizzy in 1992, David Sanchez, played with important figures as Kenny Barron, Charlie Haden, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Steve Turre, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and McCoy Tyner. David has been nominated four times for the Grammy Award and its “Coral” album win the Latin Grammy Award for better instrumental album in 2005.

ANTONIO SáNCHEZ
Antonio Sanchez three times winning of the Grammy, is at the moment considered by many critics, musicians and public lone of the most prominent and innovating drummers of its generation. Original from Mexico City, began playins at the age of 5 and at the age of 17 was admitted in the National Music Shoocl of Bellas Artes National Institute where it studied the degree in classic piano and composition.

In 1993, after studied there for 4 and a half years, a scholarship was granted him to realise a degree in Execution of Jazz in prestigious " Berklee College of Music" of Boston. Immediately after graduating with honors, in 1997 the Cuban sax player Paquito D' Rivera included Antonio in the alignment of the United Nation Orchestra that trompetist Dizzy Gillespie left into the hands of D' Rivera after deceased. Since his arrive to New York, Antonio has become one of the most solicitd drummers in the scene of international jazz. It has played and recorded with some of the greatest names of jazz like Pat Metheny (member of the Pat Metheny Group and the Pat Metheny Trio, with Christian McBride), Chick Korea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton and Toots Thielmans. It collaborates regularly with some of the most outstanding names of the last generation in Jazz like: Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, John Patitucci, Danilo Perez, David Sanchez, Paquito D' Rivera, Kenny Werner, Marcus Roberts, Avishai Cohen, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Miguel Zenon, Scott Colley, Dave Samuels, Luciana Souza, Billy Childs, Claudia Acuña, to name a few. In 2007 recorded his first production titled " Migraciones". The album includes a stellar list with some of the most famous musicians of jazz: Pat Metheny, Chick Korea, Chris Potter, David Sanchez and Scott Colley. "Mayagüez Jazz Fest". 13th - 15th Noviembre, 2009

El "Mayagüez Jazz Fest" es un evento anual que presenta esta vez su quinta edición los días 13, 14 y 15 de noviembre. Se realiza en honor de los grandes maestros del Jazz y el Latin Jazz y se le dedica a músicos destacados del área oeste de Puerto Rico. La actividad diariamente comenzará a las 6 de la tarde.

En esta ocasión el Mayagüez Jazz Fest presentará una serie de espectáculos entre los cuáles se destaca la participación del maestro “Charlie Sepúlveda”, el mayagüezano “Aldemar Valentín”, el grupo Jazz Posteao’ y otros.

El evento comenzará el viernes 13 de con la presentación en los predios fuera del teatro Yagüez en la Sultana del Oeste ( Mayagüez, Puerto Rico ) de “At Core” a las 6:30 pm. Luego dentro del Teatro (8:00pm) estará en escena “y Monrouzeau” y su grupo y “The Negroni’s Trio” .

El domingo 15 tendremos fuera del Teatro Yagüez desde las 6:30 PM al grupo “Sound Jazz” y se estará presentando en concierto dentro del Teatro el grupo “Jazz Posteao’” desde las 8:00 PM y culminando con “Aldemar Valentín” .

About this Jazz Festival

The Dominican Republic Jazz Festival is a festival full of rhythm, flavor, and color that each year is wrapped in the fragrant air of the North Coast of the Dominican Republic.It is a unique experience to have the opportunity to enjoy our festival, where the music vibrates on the lively beach of Cabarete. Every year we invite International and Local Musicians to share the stage and to bring many different genres of Jazz to please its diverse and eager music lovers; local residents and tourists alike.

The 10th Dominican Republic Jazz Festival is set to take place in Cabarete, Puerto Plata on Friday, 6 November starting at 8:30pm. The bill includes the Ambar Jazz Group (DR), Ania Paz Jazz Ensemble (Peru & DR) and the Holograma Quintet with Chombo Corniel (PR and USA). On Saturday, 7 November. 8:30pm Felle Vega & Imaginary Folklore (DR) and Antonio Sanchez Quintet (Mexico & USA) will be performing. A saxophonists’ encounter takes place on Sunday, 8 November at 9pm with Marco Pignataro Quintet (Italy & USA) and El Canario Jazz Band (DR).

Joanna Ratajczak got a Journalism Master from the University in Poznan, Poland and is fluent in German, English and Polish. She is the presenter of the award-winning Latin Jazz show on Belin radio station JazzRadio. The show is sponsored the he Brazilian Embassy in Berlin.

The Program is broadcasted from 12 noon - 6 pm (CET) on Saturday afternoons, and showcases the best Latin jazz from around the world.

In 2005, JazzRio! won the World Bronze Medal for “Best Music Program” at the New York International Radio Awards, placing it in the top three music shows on radio worldwide. JazzRadio! broadcasts in Berlin on 101.9 FM and online at www.jazzradio.net.

Joanna has been a presenter and Deejane for JazzRadio since 2005. JazzRadio General Manager Julian Allitt says: ”We asked Joanna to present JazzRio! because of her cool presentation style and her love of the music. ARTURO O’FARRILL, pianist, composer, educator and winner of the Latin Jazz USA
Outstanding Achievement Award for 2003, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York city. He was exposed to Afro-Latin music at an very early age: He’s the son of Arturo “Chico” O’Farrill, who helped popularize the jazz genre.

In 2002, Arturo O’Farrill created the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center that have performed an extensive concert schedule both at Lincoln Center and through national and international tours. His debut album with the Orchestra 'Una Noche Inolvidable' earned a GRAMMY award nomination in 2006.

Arturo O'Farrill's Song for Chico is an album that would have done his father very proud. The "Chico" of the title is Cuban-born Arturo "Chico" O'Farrill, the senior (b.1921; d.2001), the visionary Latin jazz composer who wrote, most notoriously, the "Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite," recorded in 1950 by Machito and his Afro-Cuban Orchestra. This release won the 2008 GRAMMY for Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year.

The disc opens with "Caravan", written by Juan Tizol and made famous by Duke Ellington and transformed with Papo Vazquez's infectious chart, adding a dark piano vamp and prominent conga, with a sizzling improvised centerpiece featuring tenorist Ivan Renta, trumpeter Michael Rodriguez, and trombonist Renaldo Jorge. The sound is bold and brassy, one foot in the streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico or Havana, Cuba, the other in the concert hall.

"Such Love", a composition of Arturo O'Farrill, is dedicated to the late saxophonist Sam Furnace, a mainstay in Chico's band . It opens with a stream of waving reeds and a trumpet fanfare that rolls into some lush harmony, followed by an O'Farrill cascade that leads into the multiple percussion.

Arturo O'Farrill includes two of his father's compositions, the infectious "Cuban Blues" (using the original chart) and his own setting of the warm ballad "The Journey" featuring Jim Seeley's soulful trumpet and O'Farill's delicate piano work.

Arturo O’Farrill was commissioned by Symphony Space, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and RD Rice Construction to compose a new piece of music to honor Bronx native and prospective Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. O’Farrill and his Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra will premiere the music at Symphony Space on November 5, 2009, with a second performance scheduled for the following evening.

What do Igor Stravinsky and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) have in common? Not much. But, when Stravinsky's rhythmic, blocked forms and melodic permutations are paralleled with the AACM's unrestricted innovation and roots in African and African-American traditions, the result is a conglomeration of artistic freedom, rhythmic energy and melodic expression.

Orbert Davis' "Collective Creativity" is the long awaited debut CD by Chicago Jazz Philharmonic (CJP), a barrier-breaking and genre-bending 55+ piece symphonic jazz orchestra that has the flexibility, instrumentation and talent to perform music ranging from big band classics to symphonic works. With a virtuosic mastery of diverse stylist requirements, the CJP possesses the skill to perform in an exciting arena that bridges classical music and jazz. The new disc is a synthesis of these talents. Featuring AACM members Nicole Mitchell, Ari Brown, Ed Wilkerson and Mwata Bowden, the movements of the "Collective Creativity" Suite recall the tragedy of human bondage; reflect the significance of community and collaboration; represents unity and diversity; promotes the importance of individuality; and emphasizes legacy and heritage. There's also a special guest appearance by vocalist Terisa Griffin.
